I've always been able to get Nikon gear that is in short supply from a small B&M store long before the larger superstores. Until then, anyone looking for new gear would probably be better off contacting the small B&M stores. I think that it won't be too much longer until repairs are affected, any parts that use chips may be in short supply. We probably won't know the truth, could be that Nikon has chosen to focus on the Z system over the dslrs, they are pushing the Z's and from what I can see ignoring F mount. I have heard Nikon has a better supply of the type of chips used in the mirrorless cameras and lenses than the types used in dslrs. When a company can get a small batch of chips, if used in more than one product, they then have to decide which product to put them in. Everything is affected, appliances, cars, electronics, etc.
Shortages in raw materials also play a role. Chip shortage is partially due to increased demand due to covid but also due to the loss of a major manufacturing plant in Japan last October.
